FAQ about two-tone shoes

The story of two-tone shoes

Two-tone shoes were among the most popular styles of the early 20th century. The spectator got its name from the crowds at summer sporting events in the 1920s, where contrasting leather became a sign of leisure and good taste. By the 1940s, the spectator pump was a wardrobe staple for women, worn with tea dresses, suits and swing skirts. In the 1950s, the casual saddle shoe became an everyday favorite with jeans and wide trousers.

A spectator pairs a light main color with darker leather on the toe cap and heel counter, often with decorative perforations along the seams. A saddle shoe adds a contrasting panel across the middle of the shoe. We have kept these details true to the period, from the shape of the toe to the height and placement of the heel.

Every pair is made from full-grain leather or suede in small production runs. Our spectators have leather soles that soften with wear, while Elliot has a lightweight rubber sole for casual everyday use.

Many styles have discreet silicone inserts under the insole, so you can wear them all day, whether you are dancing, working or out for a walk. Several styles also come in wide fit.
